چکیده

This paper compares three techniques for coupling multiphase porous flow and geomechanics. Sample simulations are presented to highlight the similarities and differences in the techniques. One technique uses an explicit algorithm to couple porous flow and displacements in which flow calculations are performed every timestep and displacements are calculated only during selected timesteps. A second technique uses an iteratively coupled algorithm in which flow calculations and displacement calculations are performed sequentially for the nonlinear iterations during each timestep. The third technique uses a fully coupled approach in which the program’s linear solver must solve simultaneously for fluid-flow variables and displacement variables. The techniques for coupling porous flow with displacements are described and comparison problems are presented for single-phase and threephase flow problems involving poroelastic deformations. All problems in this paper are described in detail, so the results presented here may be used for comparison with other geomechanical/ porous-flow simulators.

A coupled fluid–solid model for problems in geomechanics: Application to sand production

Some of the most challenging problems in geomechanics involve the coupling between fluid flow and solid deformation. In this paper we briefly present an overview of existing coupling methods to problems involving fluid flow and deformation and describe testing of a new discrete-based coupling method for problems in porous media. Modeled permeability and porosity distributions are compared to id...

Coupling Geomechanics and Transport in Naturally Fractured Reservoirs

Large amounts of hydrocarbon reserves are trapped in naturally fractured reservoirs which arechallenging in terms of accurate recovery prediction because of their joint fabric complexity andlithological heterogeneity. Canada, for example, has over 400 billion barrels of crude oil in fracturedcarbonates in Alberta, most of this being bitumen of viscosity greater than 106 cP in the GrosmontFormat...

Iterative coupling of flow, geomechanics and adaptive phase-field fracture including level-set crack width approaches

In this work, we present numerical studies of fixed-stress iterative coupling for solving flow and geomechanics with propagating fractures in a porous medium. Specifically, fracture propagations are described by employing a phasefield approach. The extension to fixed-stress splitting to propagating phase-field fractures and systematic investigation of its properties are important enhancements t...

A 3D elasto-plastic FEM program developed for reservoir Geomechanics simulations: Introduction and case studies

The development of yielded or failure zone due to an engineering construction is a subject of study in different disciplines. In Petroleum engineering, depletion from and injection of gas into a porous rock can cause development of a yield zone around the reservoir. Studying this phenomenon requires elasto-plastic analysis of geomaterial, in this case the porous rocks. In this study, which is a...

Multirate Undrained Splitting for Coupled Flow and Geomechanics in Porous Media

We consider a multirate iterative scheme for the quasi-static Biot equations modelling the coupled flow and geomechanics in a porous medium. The iterative scheme is based on undrained splitting where the flow and mechanics equations are decoupled with the mechanics solve followed by the pressure solve. The multirate scheme proposed here uses different time steps for the two equations, that is, ...
